I’ve been very blessed to have had a 22-year career at Intuit where I held various product roles from software developer on QuickBooks for DOS to offering leader on QuickBooks Connected Services. When I left Intuit in 2015, I was VP of Innovation and led Intuit Labs, Intuit’s internal incubator.

Why does this hurt, well I was just reading a few blog posts yesterday on finding startup co-founders: Where do you Find Cofounders? Startup Co-Founders: If You Cant Recruit Em, Should You Join Em? Finding Startup Co-Founders You would hope that networking events would be a good way to find suitable folks.

The founders were simply wrong about their assumptions about customer needs. It turns out the term “visionary founder” was usually a synonym for someone who was hallucinating. Founders Need to Run the Company Longer. So, almost like clockwork 20 th century startups fired the innovators/founders when they scaled.

In 2014 Niesh co-founder, Jae Yoo, now 26, had $10 in his bank account, and had to choose between printing past papers for exam study, or feeding himself. Niesh worked with ecentre, the startup business incubator at Massey University, as part of the Sprint Launch programme, focusing on growth through customer acquisition.

The challenges are more business challenges and design challenges--so schools need to rethink how they interact with innovation communities if it's not going to only be through commercialization: Recognize that creating a founder should be a secondary goal. Give them that and they'll decide on their own to be a founder.
