Version One has made only one investment in the region ( Headout , a fast growing marketplace for travel experiences) and I had written a small LP cheque into an emerging fund manager ( 1947 Rise , run by the awesome Shiva Sangwan ). I had only a few connections in India before this trip.

Since the middle of last week, there has been extreme stress on founders, startup leaders, and the extended startup community. This stress accelerated on Friday when the FDIC shut down and took over Silicon Valley Bank. But, many founders told me that just feeling part of a larger community was helpful.

Silicon Valley and the media industry that surrounds it values youth. The Valley has obsessed with a quick up-and-to-right momentum story because we were thought to live in “winner take most” markets. It literally drove FOMO.

Investment theses are just hypotheses; the portfolio shows how accurate the hypothesis was. J-Angels “is a community and a VC fund of top American investors (Jewish-American & Israeli-born) in Silicon Valley and San Francisco.”. It incorporates influences from the LP and, more and more, from the founders.

I just returned from 3 days in Cincinnati including attending the annual meeting of one of Upfront’s LPs – Cintrifuse. I have never been more optimistic about the impact that the tech startup community is having on cities in America or about the role that cities outside of San Francisco / Silicon Valley can play in our future.

From Fund I and now to Fund III, we have been able to serve as an important bridge between Silicon Valley and other tech ecosystems. and Canada, offering portfolio companies strong networks and resources on both sides of the border. And last but not least, we thank our investors, the LPs.

On paper, only one is in positive return territory as a fund, but the SBIC leverage is a substantial negative factor for the LP investors in that particular fund. As a partner in one of the most visible VC firms in Colorado and an LP in many of the Colorado VC firms, I’ve never heard from Matthew or anyone from the SBIC.
