Richard De Silva is based in Menlo Park with three other partners, there and 5 partners in Boston. He is starting to see this occur in sites that are verticalizing content. An example is Metacafe, a Highland Capital portfolio company. They aggregate other people’s content and curate it into categories.

One Jackson is a new online children’s clothing retailer which is surprisingly fresh – all of its designs were created by independent designers and then curated with love from its community of parents. For us, the investment is certainly fresh and newest in our portfolio, but it also feels familiar.

Proprietary selection (aka curation) – e.g. companies that build their brand and community around their product selection like Nastygal and Modcloth. Proprietary merchandise – e.g. vertically integrated retailers like Bonobos and WarbyParker. Most important though is that the product or service is amazing at some level.

This will be followed by an Investor Week starting March 9, where Techstars Austin will curate meetings with investors from all over the United States. Techstars provides their accelerator portfolio companies with access to financial, human and intellectual capital to fuel the success of their business.

What a pleasure that I got to spend an hour talking with both Om Malik (whom I’ve always respected his views) and Paul Jozefak , a venture capital partner at Neuhaus Partners in Germany (and formerly the head of Europe for SAP Ventures). His view: sometimes entrepreneurs expect too much value from the partner.
