Shame about not getting it in legal writing that you owned the original IP. I know he’s smart but you wouldn’t hire a Javascript developer to do your database design – would you? I find that one of my best sources of deal flow is from lawyers. Here’s a hack for you.

Building out your own network of other Angel or Seed investors increases the quality of your deal flow. While this doesn’t mean you need to put your hand up to run this aspect of the company you can at least advise the startup on appropriate new hires, or if they should be looking to implement something sooner rather than later.

The idea is to build a hit that would make the founder(s) an appealing and quick talent acquisition (sometimes referred to as an acq-hire). Lastly, large companies that seek new talent will likely hire promising individuals through a small exit. This should also help valorize you in a acq-hire scenario. The focus is on building.

On the matter of founders, we agreed that having a sole founder (and then hiring the really smart people) creates a more stable environment than a 50/50 partnership. He’ll usually go first because oftentimes he receives a deal flow through a friend who’s already committed. Also, remember that the journey is the reward.
