The presentation was on outsourcing generally, not just software engineering and the audience was very early stage companies (some yet to be founded). For example, you can barter for a service or you can negotiate payment terms or even equity for service. Engineering/QA. PR/Marketing. To that I say baloney.

These days sales, marketing and PR people seem to grow on trees. Another option is sweat equity. It is important to realize that most people who are willing to work for sweat equity are not a) the best, b) in demand, and c) going to put their heart and soul into your project.
