When computers first gained graphical user interfaces, software engineers helped people make the transition from physical offices to digital files with the metaphor of a desktop. As a person working for a company whose 1/2 income comes from selling flash banners on our site, responsive would be such a pain that you can’t imagine.

Building a product involves a large up-front time investment , and as a result is far riskier than becoming a consultant because you have to wait months to find out if your effort will generate revenue. As a former software engineer I hate to admit that sometimes the easiest thing to do is build the software.

I do disagree about two other points: First, this isn't the "quora rockstar engineer" perspective. It's my perspective as well and I'm not a software engineer let alone a rockstar. I am talking about self-appointed 10x egostars, not real solid software engineers. This was another 7k for me.

But what I think was hard, and it was something he couldnt consider was that it would be harder to find a *maintaining* programmer, and how much it would cost to run the software, because of technical details he didnt understand. Yes its great to implement "task A", but will it drive revenue? How much effort will it cost?
