My first official job offer came in mid-November to work as a Test Automation Developer for a big insurance company starting January 2017 in Arizona, for $59K/yr. That was a $19k salary increase from my previous job as a business analyst, just less than five months ago. I couldn’t turn it down.

Do you have any idea how sweet that salary will taste to them? Any reasonable founder salary I pay myself (I’m ball-parking $70k… maybe a bit less) will already be a higher salary than I’ve ever earned in my life. Competitive salary once we obtain funding. I have an idea, trust me.

The biggest mistake you can make is hiring someone that creates your site in (lets say) Adobe Fireworks or Flash and then you try to hire someone else to change it (because the original guy is nowhere to be found)and you find that no one but him can make changes because the original file that makes the web page is needed. a foundation.

Options and future value are great ‘add ons’ but not for a welfare check salary until ‘this great idea makes it.’ I would add that having a business such as a web development contract service would bring in cash-flow allowing the main founders to keep alive and grow the vision and initial beta.
