The shift from “startup scale” to “Facebook scale” can happen quickly, and you want to be sure that you choose the best technology for it. All this spells entirely different software architectures and priorities, requiring different kinds of technological expertise. Let’s call that last one “Facebook scale.”.

Anyone who’s been around me for the past 6-12 months has been inundated with my evangelism of eCommerce in general and Drupal + PHP. They bring with them confidence, tools, brilliant people and believe it or not, Drupal and PHP. Drupal has a worldwide engine of real software discipline. Big boy applications.

My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. Or, what do you do if you’re just coming out of school and all you’ve done is Java coursework? technologies (interactivity UI etc.).

For software engineers, I think this absolutely has to be a programming problem solved on a whiteboard. At the time, I was a die-heard Java zealot. and going into a long diatribe about how insecure the ActiveX architecture was compared to Javas pristine sandbox. I remember answering "What security model?" Any advice?

I do disagree about two other points: First, this isn't the "quora rockstar engineer" perspective. It's my perspective as well and I'm not a software engineer let alone a rockstar. When Zuckerberg started Thefacebook.com he was a PHP coder (translation: not a real developer).
