Let me start with the obvious baseline that most people probably know instinctively: Los Angeles is the 3rd largest technology startup ecosystem in the US. What is perhaps different from other regions is that we have large indigenous aerospace industry and a big high-tech import/export trade as opposed to a lot of software companies.

In Los Angeles, I have easy access to a bunch of potential strategic technical advisors through the LA CTO Forum. I quite often get a call where a founder raised $150K of initial money and has spend $120K on in-house or outsourced development and the software is 90% done. Who's doing that for your CTO?

In Los Angeles the wins of Overture, Applied Semantics, MySpace, LowerMyBills, PriceGrabber, LegalZoom and the like have produced a large number of angels who are helping the next generation of LA entrepreneurs get started and succeed. Maker Studios. Savings.com. That IPOs and then continues rising. That has a B on the front.

Today, especially in tech hubs like Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, New York, or Seattle, none of these facts hold. In other words, the most compelling reasons for NOT relying on remote engineering talent to build software no longer apply. He came to the United States in 2001 to study Software Engineering at Auburn University. We then moved our Chief Software Architect over. I wanted several of the software engineers to join me at our next startup but their employment was tied to BuildOnline. I hope that didn’t have a stature of limitation!
