This post expands on a recent podcast I did with Living Corporate outlining the story behind my career switch to software engineering. I’m currently coming up on my two-year anniversary as a software engineer on December 19, 2018. Before working as a software engineer, I was already in “tech”, just not at a startup.

Whereas, taking the job at X company, advancing to Y position, attaining Z salary, didn't feel natural. It went from selling things at a flea market, to picking up some side jobs, building websites, to sort of accidentally accepting a challenge to start a nonprofit in the coding competition. A person needs dollars in their hands.

But what I think was hard, and it was something he couldnt consider was that it would be harder to find a *maintaining* programmer, and how much it would cost to run the software, because of technical details he didnt understand. Ive had greak luck with the folks at Odesk, both for web development and things like market research.

My entry into web development (after 7 years of Unix development, 4 writing console games, and 3 writing router firmware) was helping my father-in-law’s company. I gather you assume that everyone’s a web developer? Is “I want to write client software that can run on 98.5% So clueless.
