At the time, LA and Santa Clara were both the epicenter of the technology industry due to the significant overlap between the aerospace/military industry (Los Angeles) and the computing business (Silicon Valley). Given our backgrounds, we often get asked about what makes the tech scene in Los Angeles different from that in the Valley.

It took me 8 startups and 21 years to get it right, (and one can argue success was due to the Internet bubble rather then any brilliance.) I see now how this method brings much more value to the table and how I have fit my place in with the idea that I am trying to accomplish, even if my skills and abilities are not technical.

While the answers are somewhat semantic, the pre-seed funding round is making a comeback in 2024 startup financing. Product/ tech/ insight – In many cases, pre-seed startups might already have a minimal viable product or at least some initial functionality to demonstrate potential.

Neither Pablo or I have a technical background and therefore needed someone to build our product. We have a myriad of connections to local Venture Capital firms, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and many other important individuals. All they do are tech startups and they know their stuff. I get approached about clean tech or biotech periodically – I don’t focus on these. Others that are experts in this field include Matt Harris at Village Ventures and Jim Robinson at RRE. In ad tech there’s Seth Levine at Foundry Group and both Dana Settle & Ian Sigelow at Greycroft. Right for my stage?
