And so it happened that between 2000-2008 I was the biggest buzz kill at dinner parties. The dinner parties now are filled with self-righteous angel investors bragging about how many deals they are in on. The best angels will do very well just at the best real estate investors did well in good times and bad.

There is an industry changing shift going on in the internet and mobile-based IT space for sure. Dan believed that consumer internet entrepreneurs have a choice now: traditional VC vs. super seed investors. Too many people have been burned in past and if angels get burned that will kill a lot of needed early investors.

Venture capitalists (VCs) have long been seen as the top of the pyramid for startup funding sources, but in fact angel investors now fund over 60 times as many companies, according the Center for Venture Research. Individual angel investors have been filling the gap, and now match VCs in total amount invested.

While a flood of new VCs came into existence during the late 90’s internet boom, many had difficulty raising new funds after the crashes of 2000-2001 and 2008 , and as a result significantly fewer fund managers exist now compared to a decade ago. In the past ten years there have been several dramatic changes in venture capital.

Ben offers that as Apple, Google and Amazon survived the dot.com crash, we can ignore the fate of the thousands of failed public and private dot.com companies when the bubble burst in March of 2000. Do the new wave of social/web/mobile/cloud companies going public have valuations which exceeds their fundamental value by a large margin?

Just because an angel investor that made tens of millions of dollars gives $50k to a startup, and got 9 of her friends to do the same thing, doesn't mean that company deserves to get a $5 million check.
