However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models. I understand his frustration.

The VC industry grew dramatically as a result of the Internet bubble - Before the Internet bubble the people who invested in VC funds (called LPs or Limited Partners) put about $50 billion into the industry and by 2001 this had grown precipitously to around $250 billion. So the people who invest in VC funds have two problems.

One thing that stands out as a little different for me is that the best investors get behind big themes – e.g. the internet, open source software, SaaS, ecommerce, mobile, marketplaces – which feel a bit like the deterministic theories that super forecasters are sceptical of. embrace complexity.

Though after the dotcom collapse of 2000-2001, there are many more than there were! The best ones know enough about Internet marketing (and search engine optimization) that they’ll be visible if they are looking for new projects. Why are consulting CTOs so scarce? For one thing, you’ll learn from his mistakes. Try Google.
