If you are pursuing an advertising business model, then in the early days you will almost certainly have to outsource, despite the fact that this could be a core long term advantage. It seems that the open source business model has been top of mind for many in the technology industry as of late. Isn’t this the antithesis of what open source stands for? Fast forward 18 months later and you have the first move in that model – Red Boss. Sounds like Microsoft?

Simple, they make killer products, they are a cash machine, it’s an attractive business model and they’re visionaries. 37signals also has a great business model. They’re considered the “gold standard&# for the freemium model where you give away basic service and charge for enhanced features.
