Our guest this week on #TWiVC was Dana Settle , partner at Greycroft Partners , a venture capital firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. But truthfully both Dana and I are more aligned with the lean startup principles and believe you only go FAT when you’ve really proved out your product / market fit. Time will tell.

But honestly 10 extra hours in the office each day we would be there is way more productive. Success often comes from doing a few things extraordinarily well and noticeably better than the competition and is measured in customer feedback, product engagement, growth in usage and ultimately in revenue growth. Year in, year out.

Kayak was started here in my backyard of Boston… co-founder & CTO Paul English and the product/engineering team is based here in Concord MA. Historically more revenue came from distribution/lead-gen (57% in 2007), but this tipped in 2008 though appears to be steady from 2009 to 2010 at about 58% advertising and 42% distribution.

I started in 2007 with a thesis that my primary investment decision would be about the team (70%) and only afterward about the market opportunity (30%). Products that ship late and place entire companies under serious stress. I guess if you’re in high-volume, low-differentiation mode perhaps this is efficient for you.

Apple’s not a startup but thanks in large part to the spirit Steve Jobs infused in the company, they do an incredible job of imagining a product from scratch as it should be. April 27, 2012.
