At the Upfront Summit in early February, we had a chance to have many off-the-record conversations with Limited Partners (LPs) who fund Venture Capital (VC) funds about their views of the market. LPs Still Believe Strongly in Venture Capital as a Diverse Source of Returns.

The trends described above in VC performance have an upstream effect on Limited Partners which is somewhat counter-intuitive. Most LPs are trying to manage some targeted asset allocation. For example, a $10B endowment might be looking to have 10% ($1B) allocated to venture capital at any one time.

There has been much discussion in the past few years of the changing structure of the venture capital industry. The rise of alternative sources of capital (crowd funding and the like). But it still takes VC to scale a business (thus large capital into industry winners like Uber, Airbnb, SnapChat, etc).

In my previous post, The VC Ice Age is Thawing (for now) I wrote about the reasons why the VC market came to a screeching halt in September 2008 and remained largely shut until at least April 2009. The more Machiavellian the manager is the quicker he/she rises. So get out there and start raising your capital!

I recently had an extensive debate with Tom about why and whether small funds (like mine, ff Venture Capital ) tend to outperform large funds (like his). I agree with Tom on the principle that there is a natural upper limit to fund size before returns tend to suffer, but we are at odds as to where that limit is.
