The biggest difference I cite is that Venture Capital often feels like an “individual sport” while startups are a “team sport.” I mention all of this because this has been a journey that we at Upfront Ventures have thought a lot about over the years. It was more hedge fund than venture capital.

Of partner? It’s insanely competitive to get into our industry so most have degrees from institutions like Stanford, Harvard, Wharton and University of Chicago (blatant plug ;-). EQ and Team Leadership? And so is venture capital. Picking a VC is hard. Reputation of firm? Deals done in your industry?

There was one in Silicon Valley, unsurprising, one in Chicago, and there was this group out of the south of France that served all of Europe. So then when I wanted to go into venture capital, they said, “You can’t do that, you need to be in EIR.” Then everyone just started calling me a serial entrepreneur.

In early 2012, my HBS Alumni Angels colleagues and I launched the Venture Capital Access Program (VCAP), an initiative to help women and minority-led businesses to raise capital from the Harvard alumni angel community.
