In some cases, coders will go into another room than the designers and the team leader. It gathered 120 hackers from Finland, Estonia and Latvia under the same roof and challenged them to go from zero to demo in 48 hours.

We’ve had some success with hiring interns for fashion design and editorial work, so we were hoping to replicate that with a coder, even in basic HTML, CSS and PHP. There’s definitely a learning curve, but for anywhere between $7-$25 an hour for experienced coders, it’s hard to deny.

Along the way, I was hired full time (I believe about 8 months after I started), a coder from India was hired and another contractor was added to the team. I was originally hired as a contractor, developing a SaaS app from scratch, including DB design and coding. The salary offered (and accepted) was quite low.

At this stage, its perfectly fine, and actually preferable, to use a cheap coder to just get something out the door to test in the market. Too many people leave their business decisions to coders and designers. Theres no sense in spending 5X what you have to when youre really just trying to get a proof of concept.
