We picked a write oriented benchmark using the standard Cassandra "stress" tool that is part of the product, and Denis ran and analyzed the tests on Amazon EC2 instances. Tips from Matt Mickiewicz: To keep costs low try swapping services for other services. Consider using Amazon EC2, 99Designs uses it, they get 5.25TB of images uploaded frequently, EC2 helped them scale with customer demand. The main difference is that they were able to leverage their distribution channel.

When I built my first company starting in 1999 it cost $2.5 million in team costs to code, launch, manage, market & sell our software. Linux (instead of UNIX), Apache (web server software), MySQL (instead of Oracle) and PHP. We paid 10% of the normal costs for the software and that money was for software support.
