Startup Professionals Musings

'A common misconception I often hear in the startup world is that non-profits are easy and safe, since they don’t have to pay taxes, and they don’t have to make a profit for their shareholders. In reality, from the feedback I get from non-profit executives, exactly the opposite is true. Technically speaking, in the United States, a non-profit corporation or association is one which has been exempted from Federal income taxes by meeting the criteria set out Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue

The Next Web

'Lindsay Goldwert is a content strategist and senior program executive at Hotwire PR, a global tech public relations firm. In our modern age, when the headlines are filled with the NSA spying on Americans, and personal data mining, I wasn’t too excited when my bosses told me that I was to begin using time tracking software. I’d just spent 12 years in journalism and my time hadn’t been considered particularly valuable to anyone, least of all myself.

The Rise Of Self-Serve

Mike Michalowicz

'I was standing in line at the ATM. There were four people in front of me. I estimated a five or six minute wait. Through the glass door I saw two tellers with no one in line. But I waited for the ATM machine, nonetheless. I suspect you do the same. Our world is very quickly moving toward a self serve environment. Customers prefer the privacy and control of doing it themselves.

Too many members of the team don’t really know how and why the stories are even there, they don’t understand the customer pain they’re trying to address, and they especially don’t understand how their work on this particular item helps to move the needle for their business.

A Dragon Army field trip to Zoo Atlanta

Jeff Hilimire

'Yesterday, thanks to my good friend Raymond King , CEO of Zoo Atlanta, the Dragon Army team was given an amazing behind-the-scenes tour of Zoo Atlanta. Because we were on a tour with the CEO, we were allowed to go super “behind the scenes”… …and get up close and personal with the animals. We had to put on masks when we went to see how the orangutans use computers and play games.

Hunter Walker

'“The partner is likely writing just two or three checks this year. How are you going to convince them you’re one of those companies?” This was the way a friend described their mentality in pitching VCs on A, B or C round financing.
