Design Challenge In this particular web site, we needed to get the user's email (and password). They tell you the other option is to provide your email and password.

By this point I had sent emails to several of my friends who were experts in the email / SMTP / IMAP / security ecosystem and was already getting feedback that generally trended negative. Ask for a User Name After The User Has Signed Up Sign-up forms typically ask users to create a name that is unique to the website. However, coming up with a unique user name that’s not taken could take trial and error and, thus, time. Give users the option to log in with their email address as well as a user name.
