In this new era of state sponsored hacking and fully professionalized cybercrime, it is heartening to see engineers get seriously organized and tackle something on the scale of securing the entire web. Two years after the launch of Let’s Encrypt , this is fantastic progress. I am happy with what the Pantheon team has built.

We lost the campaign badly , but we won a major battle on The Frontier of Global Politics in the age of the Internet. We’re engineers laying down foundational tech that others will build on top of. I spent a year on the Dean campaign Web Team during the presidential campaign of 2004. This s**t isn’t easy.

Bitcoin is a software engineer’s implementation of money (as distinct from, for example, a politician’s, banker’s, or economist’s). For example, the transaction log is a global, permanent thing. It follows. There’s a lot of overlap between bitcoin fans and folks with strongly libertarian views.

The remainder failed as a result of the phenomenon of investing in the best deals in their region which typically were not competitive on a national or global scale. Some regional firms, such as Austin Ventures (in Austin, TX) did prosper because they subsequently adopted either an industry or national focus. Some worked; some did not.

Needless to say the technology sitting inside Triggit is what engineers would call a nice hard problem. How do you build and operate a system that makes complex decisions in less then 50 milliseconds with a global QPS soon to be measured in the hundreds of thousands? Bonus points if there are copies of W.

However, unlike the evolution of the 15.4xx finance classes, and the extreme amount of financial engineering and financial innovations (both good, bad, and questionable) that came out of MIT research and MIT professors, most of the math involved for a venture capitalist can be done in one’s head, as long as you are decent at arithmetic.
