Given how efficient markets are when a large market like LA starts to blossom it attracts capital pretty quickly. billion in venture capital to LA’s technology startups and 2014 will shatter that figure. But the “monetization heart of the Internet” doesn’t stop at Overture, Applied Semantics and MySpace.

Brad wrote up his answer here – you should read it because it’s very instructive for how I believe communities ought to think about naming conventions. A market leader in content, music, entertainment, textiles, engineering, aerospace and trade. Still, I kind like the name, well, um, … Santa Monica.

Funding is different – In Silicon Valley you have mega venture capital funds and many of them. They not only have gotten bigger but they have an amazing track record of funding the biggest names in the sector: Cisco, Apple, Google, Facebook. LA produced Applied Semantics that created AdSense and was bought by Google.

Last year I was on Sand Hill Road in Silicon Valley meeting with one of the most prominent venture capital firms in the country. If you are talented, of course, you can get funded in any region with enough venture capital and obviously in markets outside of the Valley it is easier to get noticed and get access.
