We drew this conclusion after a meeting we had with Morgan Stanley where they showed us historical 15 & 20 year valuation trends and we all discussed what we thought this meant. But rest assured valuations get reset. When you look at how much median valuations were driven up in the past 5 years alone it’s bananas.

Until recently it was headquartered 2 blocks from our offices in Santa Monica so we literally saw it emerge under our feet and we proudly invested in the last 3 rounds of financing. How could Bird really be worth the reported $2 billion valuation that I read about in this press? Forget the valuation?—?I There is nothing viral!

On June 18, Aswath Damodaran , a finance professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, published an article on FiveThirtyEight titled “ Uber Isn’t Worth $17 Billion. Financial models, especially valuation models, are interesting in that they can be particularly precise. It now has high liquidity from South San Jose to Napa.

As a refresher, a convertible note is a loan that automatically converts into equity upon the closing of a Series A round of financing. Sometimes these loans have a valuation cap and/or a discount. The point, he says, is to avoid time-consuming valuation negotiations and allowing a variable amount of capital to be raised.

I’ve seen the Valley grow from Sunnyvale to Santa Clara to today where it stretches from San Jose to South of Market in San Francisco. A 20 th century VC was likely to have an MBA or finance background. Their need to get into high-profile deals has driven late-stage valuations into unicorn territory.
