Everyone knows that Silicon Valley has been, historically speaking, the source of much innovation. These cities won’t cost you an arm and a leg, but you’ll find that there is still plenty of opportunities in their local software development industry. San Francisco is already well publicized.

So what’s wrong the product development model? The first hint lies in its name; this is a product development model, not a marketing model, not a sales hiring model, not a customer acquisition model, not even a financing model (and we’ll also find that in most cases it’s even a poor model to use to develop a product.)

Zendesk is heavily financed by Benchmark and Charles River and has 10,000 customers. Guttula, Bizosys' CEO, and Karana founded the company with the goal to "simplify software development." Toward that end, they have created two products. 10Screens is currently also a finalist in the Microsoft BizSpark India Startup Challenge.

We were on an immersion trip to Silicon Valley, and we said, “Let’s find a way to leverage [a previous open source project],” and we decided to build something around that. Our class was at least a third finance and a third consultants. Tom Eisenmann. It really did start as an entry in the New Venture Competition.
