They are leveraging the same kinds of new technology, management thinking, and big data to improve lives that we routinely use here in Silicon Valley. Most of the projects had a technology component, but few of the entrepreneurs were technologists by training. I don't control any government contracts.

In junior high and high school, I did a bunch of programming, mostly self-taught. My first job out of school was at one of the early bioinformatics companies in Silicon Valley, working as the head of technical services. to work on an entertainment-related technology project and have stayed ever since.

When I was in high school, a classmate and I started a peer mentoring program for our middle school which has grown and flourished. He founded eBay to empower individuals through the use of new technology, and has created livelihoods for millions of individuals throughout the world.
