In my previous blog entry I spoke about ‘leveraging the wood chips’ Which is an old business maxim on how whatever we do has some kind of externality, off cut or by product which can be leveraged (very often sold) in some way to invent a new revenue stream. Sure you have Ruby, Python, many others, but PHP is winning because it’s so accessible to newbies, and it manipulates the server side continuously, allowing e-commerce, social, geolocation and other apps. Drupal is also free open source software with functionality for every possible web application. What is Drupal?

With the growth of open-sourced platforms and advent of ‘freemium pricing models’, the time to try is now. My personal favorites would be Java (Grails), Ruby (on rails) and PHP. Plus, by the time you’re ready to expand into a paid service, your business should have some revenue trickling in the front door to justify the upgrade.

37signals has several other products, but Basecamp accounts for about 60% of their projected $8 million in 2008 revenue. On the financials alone, 37signals should be worth about $80 million (10X revenue). Microsoft will also have to commit to porting Ruby to.NET and supporting RoR and Get Real throughout the firm.

I agree – this reminds me of a friend who was involved in three different IT start-ups, none of which ever turned a dime of revenue. Ruby on Rails.
