Efficient Peer-to-Peer Network of Bitcoin. Bitcoin was conceptualised in 1998 by Satoshi Nakamoto (thought to be possibly a pseudonym), however, the first official Bitcoin transaction did not occur until January 12th, 2009 when Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 Bitcoins for two Papa John’s pizzas (Dowling 2013).

Cliff Allen is someone I've known for quite a few years and he's a go to person for me when I'm thinking about issues around marketing, sales, technology, startups and networking. Of course, part of the reason that I went to you when I started thinking about visible networking is that you run a company that's right in the middle of this.

Cloud computing and the open source movements have brought down the costs of starting a company by more than 90%. The movie, “The Social Network” might have had more of an impact on creating future entrepreneurs than any other event of the past 5 years. In 1998 there were around 850 VC funds and by 2000 there were 2,300.

In the great bubble of 1998-2000, the boom in public valuations mirrored the boom in private valuations. The inflation-adjusted data from the last bubble tells the story: In the 3-year period from 1998-2000, venture capital firms raised more than $200 billion, which represented about 0.55% of the national GDP.

A big technical challenge we studied was piping streaming video over networks. Using just two data points, the modem I had in 1986 and the modem I had in 1998, the spreadsheet predicts that I’d have a 25 megabit/second connection in 2012. The same spreadsheet also predicted we’d see a music downloading service in 1999 or 2000.
