I know that most people who are close to them tend to deny their existence, as we saw in the great housing bubble of 2002-2007 and the dot com bubble of 1997-2000. The fact that today’s Internet bubble does not represent all companies does not disprove its existence. That happened a lot in 2002 and again in 2008.

Between 1996 and 2002 I was co-chairman of Interliant, a company I co-founded with three other people. We had just acquired a company (I don’t remember which one or in which city) sometime in 2000. While I learned a ton of finance lessons from the experience, I also learned a lot a leadership lessons.

He started in online publishing before the Internet (with Prestel in 1980!). Being enterprise scale means that your representatives have regular dialogue at CXO or at least VP level with Global 2000 accounts are they are bringing in millions of revenue from those accounts every year. That is the surface change.

The Past (1985-2002). The Bridge Between Online Services & The Internet: AOL. It was an online community like CompuServe and eventually started offering people dial-up access to the Internet for a monthly fee. AOL was controlled by one company and the Internet was distributed. AOL was closed, the Internet was open.
