Dana Settle (Greycroft) & I had led the first round of investment in the company in 2010 and we were looking for smart media investors to join us as investors in the company. Needless to say I think Ryan is one of the most talented engineering leads in LA but I’d stack him against anybody in the Valley, too.

The two most ambitious projects were ThereNow and IQ Engines. Given how much progress they’ve made since last year I look forward to tracking them and seeing where they end up by the end of 2010. Jason let them run over their time slot by a long time – the demo was worth seeing and he obviously knew this.

He came to the United States in 2001 to study Software Engineering at Auburn University. I wanted several of the software engineers to join me at our next startup but their employment was tied to BuildOnline. At the time he granted me permission to write about his story. I hope that didn’t have a stature of limitation!

While you dialed AOL to get on the Internet, the goal of AOL was to keep you locked into their proprietary content and thus earned the classification of “walled garden.&# They had a proprietary browser, their own search engine, their own content, chat rooms, email system, etc. Facebook Will Not be the Only Dominant Player.

Fred Wilson wrote two posts in 2010 that were very influential with the startup community. We only have 5 engineers, how can we do all that? The titles were: Mobile First, Web Second. Mobile First, Web Second (continued). If you’re in the minority that never read them – you should. I need more real estate for that.

It’s true that the carrier then gets their huge slice for being the billing and payment engine but the idea is that you as a website more than make up for this in terms of customer conversion. 11.2mm in Series A, rumored pre-money of $35mm; $1.6mm angel raised in Jan 2010. Read more: TechCrunch.

I don’t believe that search is the only answer in 2010 as it was in 2000. They bought distribution and engineering talent. So my guess is that Tweetup needs to go “multi-stream&# (as in Facebook, MySpace, etc.). There is also another inherent weakness. No big surprise. Atebits had one person if I understand correctly.
