But the team believed adding video as an integral part of an operating system and user experience (where there had only been text and still images) would be transformative. But Apple had planned to announce and demo QuickTime without a way to get video into the Mac. The software was idiot proof.

Looking at the world in 2010 I could see the same question being asked. With the stock price off since IPO and the need to “rollup” enterprise chat + video MSFT takes a swing at solving a huge b2b problem with a startup friendly platform. Just think back to 10 years ago to see what was invented. 10/ Community is a moat.

The company was founded to build games with embedded video to bring Hollywood stories, characters, and narratives to a market where “shoot and die” twitch games were in vogue. In the game business of the early 1990’s video was at best a brief narrative, a distraction you maybe watched once, not the core of the game.
