Let me start with the obvious baseline that most people probably know instinctively: Los Angeles is the 3rd largest technology startup ecosystem in the US. Many people don’t realize that the majority of the monetization of the Internet originated in Los Angeles but was perfected in Silicon Valley.

So you need to build a network even outside of your company. I found out he had a trip scheduled to Chicago. I sent him a message telling him I’d be in Chicago on such-and-such dates. I technically WOULD be in Chicago. It was 1999 and I had valuable Internet skills. But what you know is a function of who you know.
