Generally speaking in venture capital financings the legal documents will specify that only “major investors” (a threshold set in the agreement – which can be $500,000 investor or more). They have listed forward revenue figures that are highly questionable and bring the issue of SEC oversight to my mind.

A few years ago this was sort of a novelty… not that many startups were going public and not that many bloggers or mainstream journalists took the time or had familiarity with combing these SEC filings. So their revenue figures, pre IPO financing and ownership, and other info is all widely available. From Google Finance.

The best plan in my mind is to make sure that any company we invest in has a tremendous market opportunity with a real business model and high operating margins that can eventually generate real cash flow. Sure I have a plan when I invest, but it is impossible to predict the future. technology sector. When in doubt, remember cash is king.
