As a result of the IPO window shifting we saw a massive inflow of public-market capital into the latest stages of venture. The reality is that as a result of two major trends the costs of starting a technology startup went down massively. Between 1999–2005 the costs went down by 90% and between 2005–2010 they went down a further 90%.

I recently spoke at the Founder Showcase at the request of Adeo Ressi. I said that at the Founder Showcase, too. Responses ranged from, “hey, they’re in a HUGE market&# to “it is an amazing company and their technology rocks.&# And this is happening in mezzanine (pre-IPO) deals as well.

If you aren’t familiar with these metrics, I recommend reading the original post to get a sense of the numbers that I’ll be reviewing here. Looking at all vintages from 2005 to 2014, the top 5% TVPI is between 40% to 127% better than the top quartile TVPI. This would suggest that TVPI would be performing well.
