So what does CTO mean, besides just "technical founder who really cant manage anyone?" So I initially gravitated to the CTO title, and not VP of Engineering.

For example, if your goal is to generate leads , assets might be webinars, landing pages , and emails. Your primary audience is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) who has the spending power to buy your product. Though your marketing is aimed at the CTO, an accountant who shares the same interests might see your ad.

In the early days the CEO is the jack-of-all-trades, doer-of-all, famously the “chief janitor” or coffee maker. Eventually you need a VP of Product to handle your product roadmap, a CTO for engineering leadership and VPs of sales, marketing & biz dev. Most companies that are scaling have CFOs, heads of HR or talent.
