CRM became more sophisticated, resulting in detailed monthly statements and targeted direct marketing. The fact that we can get stuck at this level of soul searching is something that is rarely seen in other industries. Stocking up is the traditional way of converting cash into commodities. Here is a telling statement from an analyst on Apple’s most recent quarter: Apple’s stock price to earnings ratio has dropped to 16.72. Direct marketing—the largest direct marketing company in the world is a software company, Google. Ex-cash it’s 13.5. But this is still hardly a bubble multiple.

They’re also two triggers that direct marketers and copywriters have been well aware of for years. Basically, it’s common intuition that in a fearful market, people are looking to irrationally sell stock and in a greedy market people are looking to buy. This is probably to get my greed/hope triggered.

Of course there is still the search box on top of the page. Shows me again if the product is in stock. Underneath are two, mostly likely stock, photos of Farmers "Chuck" and "Frank" bearing copy that is almost certainly lawyer-approved – it is bereft of any passion. They deliver delight.
