Philip Bouchard : You’ve started teaching at Berkeley since 2002, Columbia in 2003 and at Stanford since 2011. At Stanford, Tom Byers , who runs the innovation and entrepreneurship program inside the engineering school, has made that a big deal and it’s now part of the curriculum. Distribution channels, brand loyalty, etc.

Other companies, like Blue Origin, Firefly Space and Space X are all conducting operations in Texas, both together with NASA and for their own unique space ventures. In short, the first wave of internet companies were widely distributed and brought people online (AOL in Virginia, Microsoft in Albuquerque and Seattle, Dell in Austin, etc.)

As a venture funded startup, you’re supposed to operate a certain way. So last year Eileen Lee, did this amazing study where she dug into data going back to 2003. In that case, if you want to pay yourself more than 150% of a market salary, we would consider that a distribution. Then we put a 5X cap on the distributions.

Unfortunately, either information asymmetry or physical distances and the resulting distribution costs can both cut against the economic advantages that would otherwise arise for all. Four years later, in May of 2003, they launched Taobao Marketplace, Alibaba’s answer to eBay. As a result, productivity naturally improves.

I was working on putting together dinners with potential female operators who were interested in becoming venture capitalists. And then I taught a class called “Intelligent Growth in Startups” in the engineering department.
