Ryan had a vision for an integration web-based system to layer on top of all of this to help support and manage the software development process. The story starts in 2007 with the founding of EFCO , which Ryan and I spearheaded and had a huge punch line in 2013 when Rally Made a Gift of $1.3 We weren’t the first investor in Rally.

Well before the web existed, I was physically tearing articles out of industry magazines and sending them to customers, prospects, other entrepreneurs, and my partner Dave, who probably got tired of the stack of paper with notes scribbled on them that landed on his desk each day.

This is the original promotion video for the first Techstars program, filmed at the end of 2006 and apparently uploaded to Youtube on January 14, 2007. The web is just amazing. As some of you may know, we made a modest investment in Slice of Lime in 2007. Slice of Lime has done web strategy, design, and development work for many of the companies we’ve invested in over the years including BigDoor , BrightLeaf , and Orbotix (new site launching soon) as well as our own Foundry Group website.

I wrote a post in 2007 titled Social Networks In Obvious Places that catalyzed me to thing harder about this as an investor. There is no question in my mind that the web (or the cloud if you like) is your friend in this scenario. I’ve been obsessed with the notion of email as the ultimate social network for a while.

A conversation view existed in Outlook 2007 but it sucked. Suddenly, it’s everywhere. It started being talked about a few years ago when it threaded conversations appeared as a core feature of Gmail.
