Pinterest now supports 18m users with growth running at 50% per month with the following: Amazon costs are around $39k for S3 and $30k for EC2 (I assume per month). They have 275 EC2 instances. They have 31 employees, up from 12 in December.

We picked a write oriented benchmark using the standard Cassandra "stress" tool that is part of the product, and Denis ran and analyzed the tests on Amazon EC2 instances. The benchmark results should be reproducible by anyone, but the Netflix cloud platform automation for AWS makes it quick and easy to do this kind of test.

The focus was S3 - storage service, EC2 - their compute cloud, their queuing system, and their flexible payment system. The EC2 is very similar to having a Linux box in a colocation facility. This would seem to be a good case for us to separate off matching and making that a more scalable operation on EC2.
