The folks from the management consulting firm did all the design and analysis; we wrote the code to work with the massive databases that supported this. The database was coming from a mainframe and by PC-standards was enormous (although it would probably be considered tiny today.). One of our software engineers wrote all the code.

I’ve been through my share of 100x to 1000x performance improvements because of a couple of lines of code or a chance in the database structure in my life as a programmer 20+ years ago.

Software Engineering. Can do basic database administration, performance optimization, index optimization, write advanced select queries, able to replace cursor usage with relational sql, understands how data is stored internally, understands how indexes are stored internally, understands how databases can be mirrored, replicated etc.
