'The new hot topic for entrepreneurs the last couple of years is crowd funding, which is anticipated to at least supplement, if not replace, the slow and mysterious process of current Angel and venture capital investors. The problem is that crowd funding means something different to everyone, and even I have been confused by the different ways the term gets used.

'Last week, in the midst of Denver Startup Week, we had a full day Foundry Group Exec conference. Ben Deda from FullContact convened about 100 execs from our 60 or so portfolio companies for the day. We had seven topics of one hour each, led by a different set of execs. The result was an incredible range of discussions across an amazing group of people.

'Last Thursday marked the one year anniversary of Brooklyn Bridge Ventures being a real fund with money in it and everything--so it was fitting that I had my first annual investor meeting. We don''t do anything too fancy. I borrowed a conference room from a friend''s company and we huddled around some great sandwiches and pasta from Catercow. 'Whenever we hear this turn of phrase, it tends to be regarding a negative situation or outcome of the proclaimer. Why was I born into a poor family? Why did I get the cranky boss? Why aren’t I good at mathematics? Why am I so short? Why don’t I have clear skin? Why me…? The interesting thing is that we never hear these people asking why they were born healthy, with working limbs, in a country without war or famine, and with a family that loves them.

'I suppose one could argue that “being an entrepreneur” is a state of mind and once you are one, you always are one. But after I sold Spunlogic to Engauge in 2008, I felt like I “worked” at Engauge for the next five years until a month ago when we sold Engauge to Publicis. Sure, I was in a position of leadership and for the last 2.5 years I was President of the company, but it was no longer something I had founded and it certainly wasn’t a startup at 250 people.
