The choice of the SQL a way to ask questions (queries) in an easy-to-understand language. Larry was loathe to sell any of the company stock; he generally took a dim view of VCs and preferred to bootstrap. I wonder if he took stock or cash. Portability (databases had previously been shackled to the specific machines they ran on).
