Only one of which, was on the list in 1999 – that being Microsoft. The reason it needs to come from the world’s Governments is to ensure that new innovations become open-source so that others can build open them – as per the Space Race. The new Australian Space Agency is a good start.

When I started my first company in 1999 we spent more than $2 million on technology infrastructure including Sun servers & Solaris operating system, Oracle databases, EMC storage, load balancers, app servers, back-up devices, disk mirrors and on and on. By then the open-source movement had really developed.

The same spreadsheet also predicted we’d see a music downloading service in 1999 or 2000. Napster arrived in June, 1999. Open source and crowdsourcing principles are well understood: When you get enough talented people working on a problem, especially in an open way, progress comes quickly.

Cloud computing and the open source movements have brought down the costs of starting a company by more than 90%. In 1998 it was 150 million, 1999 250 million and by 2000 it had crossed 350 million. The number of startups being created has increased by an order of magnitude. There are 20x more consumers online.

When I built my first company starting in 1999 it cost $2.5 Open-Source Software & Horizontal Computing. It was driven by the introduction of open-source software, most notably what was called the LAMP stack. Open source became a movement – a mentality.
