I obviously don’t have a crystal ball so the economy could fare better than my gut, but here’s why I’m cautious for some time in 2010 or early 2011: Why is the future still so unpredictable? The IMF just raised its global growth forecast from 2.5% but the truer number of underemployed is a whopping 16.8%!

When you think about the trends of faster-growing startups due to social networking, credit card enable and mobile first consumers – the reality is that many startups are becoming very large financially before needing to go public. From a technology perspective our journey is nowhere near over. 2007 was the watershed year.

I have been close to the tech & startup sectors for more than 20 years and I can’t think of a period in which I felt more optimistic about the innovation and value creation I see in front of us. So of course returns from 2000-2010 were subpar on average for the industry. Today’s Normalization. There are 20x more consumers online.

While the intention was to fully privatize the venture capital industry, the drought of funds in Israel spurred the need a ‘bail out’ of the high-tech sector, in the form of by public sector programs to resuscitate investments in high-tech companies and retain innovative start ups in the country.

In a few months, we are likely to see the annual Forbes Midas list of top performing early stage VC investors. There is always some debate about the methodology and accuracy of the list, but I think it’s a pretty interesting data set that reflects some of the things that have been happening in tech and VC over time.
