Our last fund we raised was in 2012 and we began investing it in April of 2012. In case you didn’t know, many VCs target a 3-year investment horizon for a fund and after that the fund mostly does only follow-on investments in companies in that portfolio. Wait, didn’t you just raise a fund? It’s exciting.

If you aren’t familiar with these metrics, I recommend reading the original post to get a sense of the numbers that I’ll be reviewing here. One or two of the best companies may continue to appreciate, but most of a VC’s portfolio has probably been realized, written off, or has maxed out its value. That’s only 0.5X

Cayuga Venture Fund recently closed an investment in a company called Agronomic Technology Corp (ATC). The underlying tech was developed at Cornell (like many of the companies in the CVF portfolio). The resulting product adapt-N has become the initial offering of Agronomic Technology.

On the third Wednesday of every month I co-chair a meeting called the SoCal VCA (venture capital alliance), which represents participants from all of the top venture capital firms in Southern California as well as prominent members of the Tech Coast Angels (TCA). I have been close to the tech & startup sectors for more than 20 years and I can’t think of a period in which I felt more optimistic about the innovation and value creation I see in front of us. So it is unsurprising that an over-funding environment and the commensurate returns hangover would have lasted until about – well – 2012.
