I'm a little surprised that CTO Founders with growth capital funding only have 15% of their companies. It is interesting to see the salaries of CTOs of pre-Revenue even pre-Launch companies. CTO Founders in India, have a very low equity stake. Caution - there is not much data for many of the geographies.

CTO Salary and Equity Comparison My guess is that most people who come here are going to be Founders, CEOs and CTOs who want to compare salary and equity of the CTO Position in their organization vs. their peers. Or they are looking at Hiring a CTO and want to see what salary and equity ranges look like. CTO salaries are escalating quickly.

Founders vs. Early Employees To help with this discussion, let me start with a definition of "early employee." The first few people into a startup are on a spectrum of founder vs. early employee. Founders are likely not paid for a long time and have a sizeable equity percentage for early risk and having the concept.

However, Elgg could power 100,000 networks and it would make no difference - there is no revenue stream as we give everything away under a GPL license. Common revenue streams are consulting, training, support, customization, upgraded versions for corporate applications, etc.
