SneakerLabs’ first product was a Java-based chat server and client. The hosted offering worked by having users place an “HTML-snippet” on their own website, which would retrieve the Java Applet from our servers and connect back to our servers. I tell these stories to lay the groundwork for what I am going to call Revenue Development.

Both companies generate direct revenue from their platform in the form of a revenue share / platform tax (typically 30%) on software and digital goods sold through the respective platforms. Facebook’s direct platform revenue accounted for about 15% of the company’s overall sales whereas Apple’s was less than 1%.

You may say a vague statement like “Helped to increase revenue,” but it does not show any exclusivity about it. For instance, having IIBA certifications (Business Analyst) or Java certifications can significantly raise your chance of getting a reply from hiring managers. It is excellent to mention numbers in your resume.

The question is: How can you own your little piece of the world; Not: How can you wrest $100m of revenue from a big guy. Can you imagine a tool from Microsoft that supported ClearCase, ran inside Eclipse, and had excellent support for Java?). but doesn't have to be worth $1B, then the game isn't "us or them."
