In my work with entrepreneurs, I have concluded that finding and communicating that purpose is often more important than the solution offered. He found that the return was far greater than the cost of donated shoes, and his team became intensely loyal, due to the opportunity to travel and deliver shoes in other countries.

I still have to tell some entrepreneurs that even with the best idea, they have to move to Silicon Valley to find the investors they need, or they need to move to the U.S. Even in this age of globalization and virtualization, the geographic area where you choose to live and work can still make or break your startup business.

Being an entrepreneur or business owner has its share of ups and downs. While the downs can be pretty low the ups always seem to triumph for a true entrepreneur at heart. Milestones are what entrepreneurs and business owners work towards. Once you finally reach a certain point then reflection can truly begin.

Sheltering in place during the Covid-19 pandemic, my coffees with current and ex-students (entrepreneurs, as well as employees early in their careers) have gone virtual. In this case, to reassess one’s life and ask: How do I want to use my time when the world recovers? My job feels pretty meaningless in the big picture of what matters.

For example, it has long been widely accepted that one of the primary causes for entrepreneur failure in new startups is that many give up too soon. Based on my own career as a business owner and angel investor, in this age of change, I still see key successes and growth from the same team member work qualities. Loners need not apply.
