While our portfolio at NextView is roughly equally weighted to consumer facing and B2B companies, it seems that for consumer companies in particular being first mover confers little benefit and the drawbacks probably outweigh whatever weak advantage might exist. Dropbox (cloud storage). Netflix (video streaming).

One of the themes that we’ve been most interested in at NextView over the last 12+ months has been the impact of consumer web trends on business software. I’m not the first person to describe this trend, and my prior background has been primarily as a consumer web guy more than in B2B companies.

For instance, I saw a local, Seattle startup with a high-value exact-match domain name that (if they launched in this segment) would have put them in direct competition with the likes of Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.
