“Traction is the new IP ” sums up perfectly how the technology space has evolved over the past decade due to the nature of the web. It’s also important to realize how little value investors therefore put on IP when investing in a company. The same logic holds true for most acquiring companies. Let’s take my own portfolio as an example.

From these posts, it should be clear that we get excited about social and collaborative platforms where there are strong network effects , virality and daily utility. Unlike code where version control of text is relatively straightforward, product and design IP is locked up in inaccessible file formats (binary).

I’m reminded of FTP Software, which went like gang-busters selling a TCP/IP stack for Windows. Their revenues fell very quickly after Microsoft started shipping TCP/IP as part of the OS. (The Second, the service is inherently viral. On Quora, I wrote : I think “slow fade” is another probable outcome.
